On writing an economic essay

I argue that a successful economic essay depends on elements such as the scientific research method upon which the conclusion is based, the flow of the logic within each section and the conciseness of the language. Basically, a scientific attitude is the most important building block for writing an economic essay. After all, we are not literature writers and stress the science aspect more than the artistic one.
First, and foremost, before one starts to write an economic essay, the research method must be sound and accurate to ensure that the correct data is used to arrive at the appropriate conclusion, without which, an essay would just be nonsense. Whichever methods you use, either econometrics, interviews, research of past work, or experiments, they should be able to withstand the others testifying the same experiment using the same method as you described and produce similar results. Without this characteristic, all research conclusions are void and all the essay writing is in vain.
Second, I stress the importance of the logic flow for an economic essay. Since the essay is most likely to be a very academic one and may not be easy for the readers to understand, it is the writer’s responsibility to produce a paper that is easy to follow, using the simplest of language. Try to delete all the conjunction words in your essay and see if your ideas still follow the logic, in a way that makes as much sense as when all the conjunction words were present. An economic essay should be self-evidence, instead of counting on the conjunction words to make it sound as if the logic is true. Imposing the logic strictly on the reader is never as good as stating your points clearly and let the reader arrive at the same path as your logical process.
Third, I would not view an economic paper a means of boasting how good a writer’s ability is in terms of language, rather, the paper should be stated in a clear and concise manner without vocabulary of very high level. Just like the president when he is making a speech to everyone in the country, one should try to avoid those fancy words and phrases with the goal that everyone should be able to understand the paper easily. You are trying to make the reader to focus on the content of your paper, not on how you play with the language---unless you want to write a reading passage for the SAT or the GRE. To follow the previous sentence, a little good sense of humor never hurts in your essay. They only add some flavor to the already boring economic subject.
The last advice that I give is to always proof read, no matter how confident you are in your ideas or your writing abilities. Start early and do not procrastinate so that you will be able to have some time before the due date. I always do my first draft weeks before the due date and put it aside for a couple days. The next time you come back to this essay, you will eventually see how silly some your ideas or mistakes might be when you were drafting it days ago.
Writing is not a skill developed in one day, nor is your economic sense. Ample practice and reading comes before a successful paper. So be prepared and allow your experience to accumulate on your way to producing a sound economic paper.
