The City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) performed the piece called "As If To Nothing". Choreographed by Sang Jijia, he was highly influenced by Tibetan culture as he was born there. Even though he loves his culture but he is very cautious to use element of Tibetan culture for creating his works. Then he became one of William Forsythe protégé and worked in his company 2002-2006 when he left CCDC. Sang Jijia has his own style, he usually uses multimedia like video projection of images or props in his piece. For this particular piece he used the projection in a different way and the movable props.

The subject matter and theme he picked was "Memories", he was exploring and focusing on the impermanence of memories. By reading the program he is emphasizing about how memories gets distorted and as time goes by, memories becomes blur, and it come and goes. This piece actually made me think and appreciate how the brain is very complex, how memories are stored. To have the ability to recall memories, when we please, and it is fascinating to me when a certain smell, or taste, sound, or image, can trigger a certain memory that is related to the senses. For example when I hear an ice cream bell, I remember my late great grandmother when she needs to call her servant she will always ring the bell and the sound will always remind me of her and recall when I was little I would take the bell and play tricks on the servant to ask to get me snacks from the kitchen.

Memories are wonderful but sometimes we cannot erase bad memories, we can forget them but sometimes the more we try to erase a memory the harder it gets. We can choose consciously to remember a certain memory, but after a while the memory turns blurry and we don't see it exactly how it happens and gets fragmented at times but we are certain it happen and other times we want to remember a certain memory and it we just cant seem to remember it.

Memories triggers emotions it could be sad, happy or even funny, from this piece I felt certain feelings and moods from different parts of the piece. For example the beginning of the piece was chaotic everybody was doing their movements repeatedly; doing it in different speed and tempo, there was a male dancer who was walking around the other dancers saying out the time. Example I noticed one of the dancers did a gesture that looked like she was brushing her teeth, while the male dancer was saying 7 o'clock, 12 o'clock and so on. This part of the piece had a build up till it became very chaotic. It was like watching television and changing the channels to find the right one, I say that because I didn't really look at everyone at the same time, I only looked at a few and they just caught my attention because there were so many things happening at the same time.

To me, I feel that the whole setting including the props actually help affect the piece to support the subject matter. The reason I say that is because the stage was white, it looked as if it was in clouds in our dreams. It made me as an audience to focus the dancers and it was pleasing to look at a stage that looks clear and clean. This piece used a movable prop that created a specific location, as if we were a part of the memory we are observing it happening at that moment. When the dancers are moving the set it seems like the prop is dancing and choreographically it flows with the piece smoothly.

The part that stand out to me the most from this piece is the part where the props is being moved to corner of stage left and there was a projection from the same corner and it was showing what was the dancers doing and moving around the props. But the thing was what was being projected was not exactly the same. The one being projected was edited by showing different dancers doing exactly the same movements, which was so exciting because it happened at the exact same time as the dancers where doing it live with the props. The way it is being projected actually changed the look of the stage it gave a new dimension and created a whole different feel to it. There were times when the props looked like it was inside of some ones house and there was a duet happening and it looked to me like remembering a certain incident that involved two people like an argument, because I felt a sense of struggle and the way the dancers executed the complicated choreography and made it looked natural, was all about precession of both dancers.

The other aspect of media that affected the piece the most is towards the end when the video was showed but the faces of the dancers were distorted. It gave me the feeling of confusion and how our memories becomes unclear and distorted after awhile it gets difficult to remember exact memory unless we have a photographic memory or a special gift.

By knowing Sang Jijia's background and knowing his style, and just by watching the piece itself actually gave me a clear idea what his piece was about even without reading the program, I feel that it is a successful piece of work because I was able to relate to it even without having any idea what the piece is about. I feel that the whole collaboration on how to make this piece worked, and the media used complimented each other and I should say that it was a successful piece.
