From ancient times, people from all over the world have benefited from the salubrious qualities of hot water. Japanese, Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Turkish and Nordic cultures have long partaken in hot spring baths.

Wood fired hot tubs

These varieties of hot tubsare desired by people who abide by the traditional rules or structures and therefore prefer wood fired hot tubs. Most wood fired hot tubs are in rural locations because of the easy access to plenty of wood. The biggest advantage of using these tubs is that it reduces the cost of hot tubs that uses electricity. The fire heats the water which slowly rises to the top of the tub and simultaneously the cold water reaches the heater to be heated. This needs no pump as it provides natural convection.

There are generally two types of wood fired hot tubs, External and Submersible

External:

The external heaters work on the principle of “thermal siphoning”. Thermal siphoning is achieved by keeping the stove lower to the tub, as the water gets heated; it rises and creates a circulation of hot water. The transfer of heat is very slow in this type of hot tub but with the incorporation of an electric circulating pump it becomes effective. The external stoves have to be drained in chilly conditions.

Apart from the slow heating and draining problems there are many advantages to this type of hot tub too. As this heater is positioned outside the tub there is extra room which is not the case in submersible as the heater is inside the tub. The chimney is not over the hot tub, its far away so there is no possible way of contacting the hot chimney avoiding the chance of smoke and sparks falling into the bathers in the wood fired hot tub which may be the case for submersible.

Cleaning is easy unlike submersible as it has the heater region inside the tub and in some cases disassemble of protective fence is needed to be done to remove trapped leaves, grass and sand. Frequent cleaning is not required because no ash from the wood ends up in the water. By controlling the fire away less debris ends up in the hot tub.

Submersible:

There is a huge difference in submersible wood stove in the tub and an external wood heater. The major advantage of the submersible heaters is that there is not heat loss, all the heat goes into the tub rather than being wasted into the air.

This type of stove has two heat exchanger pipes. The external heater goes through the side wall of the hot tub which may lead to probable leakage problems. The submersible stoves are made of aluminium which have excellent heat transfer properties and is resistant to corrosion. The hot tub users are kept away from the stove by a cedar fence which acts as a heat shield.

The wood fired hot tubs take 4-5 hours to heat the water to 380C and need around 4 bags of wood in comparison to the 24-36 hours needed to heat water by heater powered by electricity. The price of purchasing a wood-fired Hot Tub is the final price as no qualified electrician or service and regular clocks would be needed in the years to come.

These hot tubs do not use any jets or filters. Pipes and jets result in bacterial growth which is not possible to clean by scrubbing alone. Therefore aggressive chemicals have to be used to tackle the biofilm made by the bacterial infestation. The chemicals add to the cost and are irritating to the eyes and skin. For that reason it is better to use a hot tub which does not use electricity.

It is an absolute delight to listen to crackling of the fire rather than monotone noise of engines.

Eco friendly hot tubs

Go Green!

Green is in now days. Everyone is emphasising on eco friendly products and there are “green” alternatives to everything which we use and purchase. This growing trend is not just because it is a sensible thing to do but also because as it turns out going green can save time and money too.

Now the real question is what qualifies a hot tub to be environmentally friendly in regards to its operation and construction? The fundamental focus of the manufacturers is energy efficiency. If the hot tub is able to lessen its energy consumption it is said to be greener. The efficiency of the hot tub would increase with the decrease in the consumption of electricity. This would indirectly also effect to minimize carbon footprint of the hot tub.

Going eco friendly is very appealing to the hot tub owners as well, would be owners and the consumers as well so a lot of hot tub manufacturers are producing more energy efficient hot tubs.

Energy-saving Heating

The hot tub is not required to heat for 24 hours; one can heat it when it is required. Now to help save energy the hot tubs are incorporated with an electric timer which is to be set for 25-30 minutes before planning to use the tub. Electric timer is a great tool to help save energy and our environment.

Another way to save energy is to use the hot tub covers. These covers help trap the heat when the tub is not in use. The foam density and heat seal gasket of the covers provide reduction in electricity costs by saving energy by minimizing heat and moisture loss.

The heaters have an energy conserving, ultra low watt density titanium heating element and housing which increases thermal efficiency and save energy.

The hot tubs utilize LED technology lights to produce more light per watt than incandescent bulbs. They last longer and cost less to use than other types of bulbs.

Circulation pump are engineered to heat, filter, and sanitize in a highly efficient way, it also transfers heat created by the motor to the water, reducing energy usage.

Insulated Hot Tubs

The hot tubs which are outside are prone to weather changes like freezing, cold rain etc. An adequate protection is needed around the hot tub to avoid the increase in cost of keeping the hot tub heated. To do that modern insulation comes to play which is done with foam layers. The insulation blanket results in 25% less energy usage and also protects from moisture and mold and even reduces operating noise.

The full foam insulation conserves energy and reduces the heating costs by maintaining the water temperature longer.

Chemical Alert

The problem child with hot tub ownership is chemicals. Harmful chemicals are used to keep the water clean which can be very harmful for breathing or skin if used in large amounts. The chemical builds up over time and they have to be cleaned and continued for use. The chemical runoff leads to environmental concern and not a sound hot tub operation.

The goal is to find the best green hot tubs which have energy saving features, uses less chemicals and needs low maintenance. All these factors combine to give a homeowner an eco friendly hot tub to enjoy for many years.

Red cedar hot tubs

For centuries people have enjoyed the relaxing pleasures and therapeutic benefits of hot water. Hot tubs have been popular and can be seen to be used as early as by the Greeks.

Cedar and oak have been very popular because of their natural resistance to decay as it contains high levels of Thujaplicans and water soluble phenolics which are natural fungicides creating resistance to rot. It has expansive properties when soaked in water. The barrels of wood were used back in the olden days for holding liquids including wines and spirits.

Red cedar’s Latin Genus name is Arborvitae - "Tree of life".

Red cedar hot tubs are crafted one at a time. They are unique among softwoods and are the best thermal insulator among other softwood species.

Resistance to decay is the strongest point of cedar wood. It has aromatic scent which is very pleasant and soothing and the odour repels moths, insects and vermin. Its fibrous structure makes it an ideal wood for watertight joints. Properties like resistance and high insulation makes cedar the best choice for hot tubs and makes it economical to heat.

It is no coincidence that cedar tubs have become popular. The red cedar has extraordinary durability and is the first choice of wood in every area. A hot tub made form this wood will remain beautiful and will serve without any troubles. Another great advantage of cedar wood is that it has low coefficient of expansion, so unlike other woods it would not swell, shrink from varying degree of temperature and moisture.

This wood can be refined to a smooth and silky form. It has amazing gluing properties and paints excellently. The colour is extremely attractive from light straw shade of dark reddish brown of the heartwood to almost pure white of the narrow sapwood.

The wood has natural preservative oil that makes it immune to any decay and gives it durability. Due to these properties one does not have to use any artificial preservative treatment. No pains have to be taken to preserve the surface of the wood as it does not deteriorate even if severe conditions of temperature prevail.

The red cedar’s workability, stability, insulating properties, rot resistance makes it the perfect contender for building material applications. The sauna like aroma is the added advantage which makes this wood even more ideal for hot tubs.

Another plus factor is it is very beautiful to look at so if you are looking for the best possible material, red cedar is the answer.
