Try not to store your guitar on the floor or in a humid storage space, because it could affect the sound quality. If you have an acoustic guitar, get some silica gel, and put it inside the guitar body. This will help control the humidity your guitar is exposed to.

Replace the strings at least once a month if you are performing often, and use a higher quality string, in order to get the optimum sound quality out of your guitar. Make sure you are using the proper strings for your guitar. Do not put classical guitar strings (nylon strings), on an electric guitar. Generally you will use round wound on an acoustic guitar, and flat wound on an electric guitar.

Do not replace your strings just before a gig or a concert. Even if you think you have the tuning "dialed in"... you will find that your guitar will need to be re-tuned after your first song... not good!

Try to replace your guitar strings approximately a week or so, before your next big gig. During that time, you may need to tune them more often until they have "dug in". Keep your old set of strings for backup just in case.

A common practice with jazz or classical guitarists is to use low-tension strings, when they will be playing for longer periods of time during a performance. They do this in order to maintain finger strength and it reduces stress when playing complex picking and fingering styles.

Another great tip is to keep the string tension on your guitar loose during longer periods of storage. This will reduce the stress on the neck and truss rod.

The Proper way to condition the wood on your guitar is to use a good guitar polish to keep the guitar protected. Use mineral oil on the fret board of the neck especially if it is made of rosewood. A Rosewood fret board sounds great when it is well cared for.

A bent truss rod on you guitar can be very frustrating to play as well. The action speed becomes reduced, and you can begin to hear a nasty string buzz". There is a simple test that will help you determine whether your guitar neck is bent or not. Just press the sixth string in the 1st and 12th fret. Then, check whether the string sticks to its 12th fret (from 1st to 12th fret). If not, then the guitar may be bent. You can fix this by adjusting the truss rod in the neck of your guitar. Use an "L wrench" to make the adjustment. Unfortunately, not all guitars can be adjusted this way as in the case of a classical guitar as they do not have an adjustment available.

Have your guitar inspected by a professional guitar Luther (Guitar Tech) at least once every 6 months or so if you play it a lot. These tips may seem a bit "overkill" to some of you but when you have made your living playing a guitar... you will experience first hand what a well maintained guitar offers as opposed to one that is neglected.
