Executive Summary

In this assignment, we have learnt about corporate social responsibility and the purpose. What is Corporate Social Responsibility? Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is known and described as self-regulation that is part of a corporation's business model and strategic plan. In a perfect world, CSR means that a business monitors itself to make sure it adheres to legal, ethical, environmental, and international standards across its operations. The more visible aspect of CSR is a corporation's willingness to promote and support community, national, and global causes. Besides that, CSR aspires to honor people, planet and profits in that order.

In this corporate social responsibility group task, we five person consists organizing a major fair and raise funds for charity. The fair will take place on 6th June 2015 which is a tentative date at either Stadium Indera Mulia Ahmad, Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah or Dataran Ipoh which will be confirmed as soon as possible. The main objective is to raise funds for charity and those who in need. Our target is to raise about RM85, 000 and will be handed over to the Sultan Idris Shah Foundation. During the fair, there will be stalls for selling various kinds of items from household items, clothes, vegetables, fruits to haircut and beauty services to food and beverage stalls. There is no limit what can be displayed and sold at the fair.

1.0 Introduction of Corporate Social Responsibility

CSR stand for Corporate Social Responsibility. CSR in the 1950s the main focus is on businesses' responsibilities to society and making good deeds for society. Then, in the 1960s key events, ideas and people were instrumental in characterizing a social alters ushered in during this era. After that, during the 1990s the concept of CSR became almost universally ratified, also CSR is coupled with strategy literature and lastly, in the 2000s, CSR turn into definitively an important strategic issue. CSR is for a corporation’s sense of responsibility towards a community and an environment both social and ecological in which it executes. Corporates express this citizenship through their pollution and waste reduction processes, by contributing social and educational programs, and also by make a profit adequate returns on the applied resources. 1.1 CSR Definition

Corporate social responsibility is commonly a concept whereby corporate decides voluntarily to dedicate to a better society and the cleaner environment. Besides this, corporate social responsibility was represented by the contributions undertaken by corporate to society via its social investment and business activities. This was also to connect a Concept of sustainable development to the corporate’s level.

Over the last years a raising number of companies worldwide began promoting their Corporate Social Responsibility strategies since the public, investors and the customer expect them to act sustainable as good as responsible. Therefore, in most cases CSR was the result of a variety of environmental, social and economic pressures. In the term Corporate Social Responsibility was imprecise and its application differs. Thus, CSR could not only refer to compliance of human right labor, standards and social security arrangements. However, is also to a fight against climate alter, consumer protection and sustainable management of natural resources.

The notion of Corporate Social Responsibility is first mentioned 1953 in a publication ‘Social Responsibilities of a Businessman’ by William J. Bowen. But the term CSR became barely popular in 1990s, while the German Betapharm who is a generic pharmaceutical company determined to implement CSR. Then, the generic market was characterized by the interchangeability of products. Next, in 1997 the halt in sales growth lead a company to the realization that in a generic drugs market companies cannot differentiate on the price or quality. This is the prelude for the company to utilized CSR as an expression of the corporate’s values and also as a part of its corporate strategies. By applying strategic and social commitment for the families with chronically ill children and Betapharm take a strategic advantage.

In July 2001, a European Commission determined to launch a consultative paper on CSR with the title, promoting the European Framework for CSR. Then, this paper purposed to launch the debate on how the European Union can promote CSR at both the European and the international level. Next, the paper still aimed to promote CSR practices, for ensuring the credibility of CSR to claim as well as to offer coherence in public policy on CSR. Furthermore, Responsible Companies in the age of globalization is related how a company become aware of its societal responsibility relies on various factors like the markets in which it manipulate, its business line and its sizes.

In recent years CSR had become a basic business practice and also has gained much attention from a management of large international companies. Thus, they understand that the strong CSR program was an essential element in measure up great business practices and effective leadership. Next, companies had explored that their impact on an economic, environmental and social sector directly influence their relationships with employees, customers and investors. Whilst so far CSR is majorly promoted by a number of large or transnational companies, it was now also becoming significant to small national companies.

As the companies confront themselves in the context of globalization, they were enhanced aware that Corporate Social Responsibility could be of direct economic values. Although the main goal of the company was to generate profits, companies could at the same time devote to environmental and social objectives by integrating CSR as a strategic investment for their business strategy. Numbers of companies with well environmental and social records shows that CSR activities could result in a better performance and could generate more growth and profits. Then, research has not shown that company CSR programs affect to an extensive degree consumer purchasing judgment, with many employees and investors also being swayed in their selection of companies. Moreover, a primary challenge for companies today was attracting and retaining skilled employees. There was not only an image gain for the companies utilizing CSR, but it was also vital for the workers. Within the company, socially responsible practices mainly involve workers and relate to issues like investing in human capital, safety and health and managing change.

1.3 Types of CSR

CSR could encompass a broad variety of tactics, from providing nonprofit organizations a portion of the company's proceeds, for giving away a service or product to a worthy recipient for each sale made. Here were the few of the wide categories of social responsibility that businesses were practicing.

First is the Environment which one majorly focus of CSR was the environment. Businesses, both small and large, had a large carbon footprint. Any steps they could take to decrease those footprints were considered both good for the corporate and society as a whole.

Second is the Philanthropy which businesses also practice social responsibility by contributing to local and national charities. Whether it includes giving time or money, businesses had a lot of resources that could benefit local community programs and charities.

Third are the Ethical labor practices which by treating workers ethically and fairly, companies could also demonstrate their CSR. This was especially true of businesses that operate in international locations with labor laws that differ from those in the United States.

1.4 Examples of CSR

When many companies now practice several form of social responsibility, some are creating it a core of their action. Ben and Jerry's, for example, use merely fair trade ingredients and had developed a dairy farm sustainability scheme in its home state of Vermont. Next, Starbucks had created its C.A.F.E. Practices guidelines, which were designed to assure the company sources continuously grown and processed coffee by evaluating the social, economic, and environmental aspects of coffee production. In addition, Tom's Shoes, another notable instance of a company with CSR at its core, contributes a pair of shoes to a child in demand for each pair a customer purchases. Then,

Undertaking socially responsible initiatives was truly a win-win situation. Because it was not only will your company appeal to socially awareness employees and consumers, but you'll also create a real difference in the world and keep in mind that in CSR, honesty and transparency about what you're doing were paramount to earn the public's trust.

There is a word “If decisions about social responsibility were made behind closed doors, people would wonder if there were strings attached, and also if the donations were really going where they say." Cooney said. Then, “Engage your workers and consumers in giving back. Let them felt like they had a voice." (Fallon, N. 2014)

2.0 Contents

Regarding Corporate Social Responsibility, team members Ragz, Avinesh, Dennis, Eddy Morgan and Myself (Mahendran) sought out took seek sponsors for the upcoming event which helps to support the victims of the recently occurred flash flood. The given tasks were to raise the amount of donation and as well at the same time raise awareness to help and aid the victims.

Members in the team and myself had searched for individual who were willing to provide either assistance or contribution which allows us to gain charitable money, not only that, but as well to raise awareness to the outside media. By awareness, the event could be taken to higher levels and extra donations can be made. Awareness to extend to the social media could as well provide additional support for our event. This event can be taken to highest extend up to country awareness.

The proposal letters were prepared by the team, and was signed and authorized by the principal, Miss Cindy Chong Evans. The proposal letter wrote states the purpose, which includes details for the intended event. The statement as well provides whereabouts, the time and as well provided contact details of the members who passed the proposal letter to individuals who were willing to take part in the event. Along with the proposal was a letter which participants can fill their details and as well signature to affirmatively take part in the event. The wiling participants gave other statements as well, such as contact details.

First week of finding proposal was done by the members and managed to find two individuals who were willing to take part and sponsor donation, some were willing to sponsors foods. These are the individual who sponsored on the first week, The Artistic Makeup Company was successful, our team got their involvement and the person referred was Ms. Chew Poh Yin, contact number 0165129206, the company is located at Bercham Area. The Recycling Company, the person named Mr. Roy and contact number 016 5107468 gotten their involvement and had intended to donate RM 150. The statements and theirs details was recorded in excel form, with columns providing the individuals name, address, contact details, and intended donation.

In the second week, the team sought out to seek further, individuals who were up to provide contribution. These are the individuals, who are willing to participate, Mr James, who has a burger stall, intends to provide food services. Mr Arif, the second individual who intends to provide burger as well.

In the final week, the team had managed to get Jati Oil Company; the person referred was Mr.Santha, contact number 016-5077343 gotten their involvement. Another managed sponsor was YOBSN business, the person referred Mr. Mano contact number 016-5157977 had gotten their involvement as well. The last of the sponsor the team gotten, was Protein(Body Building) stall by Mr Mano , contact number 016-5157977.

The team members, and myself are working together to provide even further donation and further amount of donation, which can help the victims. As intended target is to raise RM85,000. The social media is used as well, as the social awareness can further aid, and accumulate the intended amount. Social media will be a great tool, hoping to get further amount of donations.

In times of needs victims should be properly cared for. The victims should be taken care, and as part of society we should be a helping hand to them. In difficult times for , it is only caring to provide assistance to them, when they are need. As part of society, helping hand is required, individuals should show compassion to one another.

In this event, the team for raising and finding willing sponsors went out, and had good exposure, so that they get awareness of the individuals face during disasters like this. Learning from these will be a handful of knowledge, providing them not only the valuable moral values but as well character building in the form of mental effort. As individuals should be aware of the society around. Showing thoughtful caring and as an effort to be supportive to raise donations amounts and be responsible individual to provide support.

In this event, not only moral values are build, but as values of individuals necessities and requirements are learned. Having to get out, see difficult times individuals face, and learning how to be a helping citizen.

4.0 Recommendation

Further improvements can be made in this event, improvements such as events finding willing participants to take part in this event. This event can help the victims to achieve a good outcome, the best possible solutions for the victims. The victims can be helped in numerous ways, ways that can help them with their troubles, help them during their difficulties. Events like this should be published, published such as in the newspaper. A very good form of exposure will be from media. Medias can help and aid many individuals to gain their loss during the disaster. In times of need we should assist one another to create a good and loving relationship.
