There are many different points between data warehouse an OLTP:

  • Data warehouse is a storehouse of a company's stored data. It aims to facilitate analysis and reporting, but OLTP manage and make transaction-oriented application easy to process.
  • Both of the OLTP and data warehouse are relational databases, but their implementation objectives are different (Courses, 2010).
  • The transactions of OLPT database are recorded in real time, on other hand data warehouse does not support real time in its enterprise requirements. It is store of historical and current data, and it can stores data extracted from other data sources.
  • The design of OLTP database is for real time operations of business, but the design of data warehouse is for analysis by attributes and categories of business measures.
  • Data warehouse database is optimized for volume packs and complex, large, random queries that access many rows per table. However, OLPT database for a common location of transaction, usually add or retrieve one row at same time for each table.
  • Data warehouse database is loaded by consistent, valid data; requires no real time validation, but OLTP uses validation data tables to validate the received data at the period of transaction.
  • Data warehouse database can support only few simultaneous users relative to OLTP. However, this last one can support numerous users.
  • In OLTP systems usually get data into the system. However, data warehouse system get them out of the system (GeekInterview, 2005).
Advantages of data warehouses:

Some of the advantages of data warehouse are like follows:

  • Make the reporting and analysing of information easy by providing a common data model for all interest data.
  • It can resolve the inconsistencies after identify them which facilitate analysis and reporting the data into data warehouse donation.
  • The users can controlled the information of data warehouses, which means that even if this data are deleted over time, the data warehouses information can restore it safely for a long time.
  • The operational systems can keep its speed during retrieving of data, which means that data warehouses have no negative reflections on the performance operating systems.
  • Data warehouses facilitate applications of decision support system like movement reports (Wikipedia, 2008).
Disadvantages

Also some of disadvantages of using data warehouse are:

  • They are not the best environment for unstructured data.
  • There is a latency element in data of data warehouse, because data has to be extracted and loaded and transformed into warehouse.
  • Data warehouses design needs a high costs to implement.

Conclusions

Data warehousing is a set of decision support technologies. It helps the users for making better decisions. It contains historical data derived from transaction data, but it can consist of data from other sources. It has many advantages ant at the same time it has some inconvenient. The dream home company can use it for Historical, summarized and consolidated data (Manish, 2010).
