Using Computers Promote Cheating Among Students

Introduction

The United States is facing numerous problems in its examination systems due to technological improvements and advancements in the communication technology. As the current trends show, most students have had their assignments, examinations, and academic projects done by other people online. As a problem, it is evident that most of the American educational sectors are suffering from this poor education culture due to technological advancements. There are numerous online firms, both locally and internationally, offering to do assignments and examinations for students at a cost and this is a major problem as it weakens the education prowess within the country as it allows students to attain grades they hardly deserve. With the introduction of online degrees and other educational programs, the problem is intensifying and something needs to be done drastically (Sigal, Adina and Maayan 249). There is need to ensure that students attain proper, relevant, and contemporary knowledge to approach the challenges of the current world.

Basically, education is core value in society today being a fundamental human right that gives value to the various aspects of life. Every individual has a right to education and not only education but the right to a quality education. It confers ideas that lead to the eventual empowerment of man in order to better understand the dynamics in the world today. These provisions should not be compromised by allowing students to cheat in their assignments, exams, and course projects through the advent of computer and online education. Education has been changing over the years and this can be attributed to modernity as well as the general development of mankind (Fuhrman 197). This is because, problems in society have changed and hence, the examination systems also have to change alongside the various changes in technological use so that the examination process can be trusted and efficient. Through computer advent, technology plays a critical role in life today since all services are now accessible through online forums. This may include things like the internet, which makes communication much easier. There is also emergence of the social networking sites and this give another forum where active cheating in examinations, assignments, and projects take place. Therefore, the United States needs to enhance and embrace new examination methods to curb the surging cheating trends promoted by computers.

Computer contributing to cheating in examinations, assignments, and academic projects among students in America

First, Most schools in the districts across the United States have not had their examination infrastructures upgraded to curb the current active cheating in examinations, assignments, and projects among students . The adoption of online learning, accessing books and other learning materials online and communicating all educational aspects through internet and other technological advancements have been adopted massively in many schools. Although this has promoted the efficiency and proficiency of knowledge provision, promptness, and growth of both public schools and some of the private educational institutions, the cheating mechanisms have also increased amongst students. As a solution, there is an urgent need to technologically upgrade the examination policies and facilities of most schools in the districts across the United State. Over the years, the technological development in the whole world has been enormous and this has been replicated across the States. However, this has come to be both a challenge since many schools are finding it hard to cope with the ever trending cheating in examinations, assignments, and projects (Saettler 102).

There is increasing demand for the new examination mechanisms since the old systems cannot be relevant to the current generation of students. The past few years has been marked with the rush to increase in the internet connectivity in schools and online assignments. This is because, there was apparent need to catch with other countries in Europe that have made it possible for their students to have such privileges a way of promoting learning. Therefore, the United States was lagging behind and it needed much of this technological upgrading (Mervyn 371). However, the rush has also led to other problems such as the need to have a well developed infrastructure to accommodate the latest technology in examining students, something that most schools are still lacking. Therefore, this has created a vacuum as other schools are struggling to cope up with the latest examination systems while those that have undergone through the necessary upgrading are doing well ahead of others. This has led to inequality as other students seem to cheat in their examinations, assignments, and projects compared to others who cannot. Research conducted by the Federal Communications Commission showed that close to 97% of the schools had internet connections by the year 2010, and a number of students use computers to cheat in their examinations, assignments, and projects. Therefore, there is an examination administration gap among the several schools cutting across the districts in the U.S. There is need for upgrading examination and assignment administration tools in order to match with the demand driven by the new digital tools that constantly require increasing bandwidth.

Introduction of social networking forums into the learning system has also contributed to the cheating phenomenon as much as they have exposed most students in the social contexts. . These sites such as facebook and twitter are used by schools to organize events and other relevant education programs; however, they are also used by some students to cheat. It is hard to limit the students’ interactions to other people who are not part of the education program. Hence they have become better for the students to cheat due to their effectiveness in sharing information. As a solution, there is need to create computer examination programs which are most restricting in terms of the users and access so that information flow can be restricted to between teachers and individual students. Stringent laws need to be created and implemented against online cheating in examinations, assignments, and projects (Ponzo 5).

The rapid use of technology and its quick growth is making it hard for the evaluation and a comprehensive research on the impact of such technology to be carried out. This is because, one technology is quickly replaced by another making it hard for their effectiveness in the examination process to be determined. As a solution, the government should regulate the use and application of various technologies and online companies that promote cheating in order to have a real impact on the education system. Most countries in Europe have regulated the use of computers in the examinations in order to curb the probable cheating trends.

Mobile computing is one area that is rapidly contributing to the cheating trends in the high schools and colleges in the US. Research has proved that simulations are more effective in educating young children than real class lessons; nonetheless, using such technologies to cheat in examinations, assignments, and projects is unlawful. The process of creating computer applications that can curb cheating is quite expensive and as such, it requires huge capital investment from the government. Therefore, the private sector should join hands with the government in ensuring that such technologies are introduced into the examination processes.

It is also important to note that e –learning has been gaining momentum in most parts of the US; however, there has been a tremendous cheating due to lack of enough administrative infrastructure and proper funding from the government. For instance, virtual full time classes cannot be greatly used in the United States to decongest the classrooms. This is because there is still changes examination administration across the U.S. The program also requires a supervisor and this will make it hard for students to cheat in examinations, assignments, and projects even if they handle them from their homes. As a solution, there is need for the state to provide mechanisms through which such programs can be undertaken to make examinations, assignments, and academic projects in America flawless and effective (West 99).

Conclusion

With the advent of computer technology, most of the American educational institutions are suffering from students cheating in their examinations, assignments, and academic projects. Numerous online firms exist which offers to do assignments and examinations for students at a cost. This is a major problem as it weakens the education prowess within the country and compromises student’s competency. The government and other relevant private players are needed to provide the resources that are necessary to curb the latest use of computers amongst students to massively cheat in examinations, assignments, and projects.
